The stethoscope has undergone a high-tech makeover sporting a bluetooth connectivity and an LCD panel.
3M Health Care has announced the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope which packs features most headphone users would be familiar with, such as noise cancellation and greater sound clarity. With the souped-up hearing, the Littman then transmits the lung, heart and body sounds wirelessly to the bundled Zargis StethAssist program for further analysis, as well as to keep a record on file. The cost has also been upgraded, at a pricey USD379, which hopefully won’t trickle down too much to the tab on your next visit to the clinic.

Touch Sight

August 2, 2008

Touch Sight is a digital camera for visually impaired people, recording an “image” and sound of the environment or voice.
Touch Sight does not have an LCD but instead has a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface, allowing the user to touch the image. The sound file and picture document combine to become a touchable photo that is saved in the device and can be uploaded to share with others–and downloaded to other Touch Sight cameras.

Programmable SkyCeiling is a virtual skylight that recreates and simulates the rising and setting of the sun. It creates an enhanced illusion of nature by introducing changes of light and color, in real-time. The programmable features allow SkyCeilings to increase and decrease in light intensity and color to simulate the local rising and setting of the sun – even following the seasons. A computerized control-device that can be programmed for any geographic area is responsible for producing the many subtle changes of the system.

The programmed dimming feature of SkyCeilings has benefits to human physiology and well-being as well. For example, in an ICU the body’s circadian rhythm can be reinforced to help healing. An “opposite” use of this technology can occur in a nurse’s station where an environment of alertness can be created during the middle of the night. Other applications, including shortened or dramatic cycles, extend to casinos, restaurants, home theaters, and other healthcare and hospitality environments.
